What Can’t You Stand?

This morning I was thinking about what I wanted to post on and it became clear to me. I thought, I will post on what I am reading just to see if others have read the same things or to challenge them to do so. After I had this thought I went to daveyblackburn.com and that dude posted on what he was reading. So my natural instinct was not to post on that because people will probably think I am a loser blogger who steals other people’s ideas. Well, some would agree on the loser part but I am not stealing Davey’s idea. As a matter of fact I want to read that book that he was talking about, Chasing Cool. It seems like a good read. What it did confirm is that we are truly brothers from a different mother. That is for certain. So I’m sure you are like alright alright for crying out loud what are you reading, so here it is. Last week was monumental. I read 2 books in a week. It usually takes me 2 weeks to read A book. Ha! I read Hedges by Jerry Jenkins and Holy Discontent by Bill Hybels. These books had me completely wrapped! In Hedges I learned to never get comfortable with my boundaries with women and to always continue to keep a dose of fear in the back of my mind. That was some good stuff. I would reccomend it to any married brotha out there! The second was Holy Discontent. Bill Hybels made some pretty incredible statements, like he does in all of his stuff! Hybels kept coming back to a quote and it was from Popeye the Sailor Man. When someone would treat Olive Oyl with disrespect Popeye would say, “That’s all I can stands, and I can’t stands no more!” Then he asked the question what can’t you stand? So I ask you that question, what in your life can you not stand? Is it teenagers who are being shaped by the media instead of Scripture? Is it teenagers who are being raised by the PS3 and XBOX 360 instead of their parents? Is it teenagers who are being asked do little and not expected to do much? Well, those are mine, but what about you? What can’t you stand? Is it homelessness? Is it child abuse? Is it self harm? Is it abortion? Is it bad church? Think about it for a minute. I challenge you to pick up that book, read it, and see where your Holy Discontent is. That was some good stuff! So now I am reading Good to Great in God’s Eyes by Chip Ingram and Jesus Wants to Save Christians by Rob Bell. They are pretty good so far. I think the truths in Ingram’s book are applicable to anyone and Bell’s understanding of Scripture is mind blowing. I can’t wait to get through these! I will post about them later. So, the last thing I want to ask you is…What Can’t You Stand? Think about it. Let it sink in. Act on it!
